Using design to help you get unstuck on what matters most

Leading through uncertainty is like walking through fog.

And there's a lot of uncertainty around us right now. Whether you’re a leader in a corporation, a startup, or a non-profit, you’re likely feeling it.

Take AI as an example: A recent MIT study showed that 95% of organizations studied got zero return on their AI investment. ZERO. Uncertainty is here to stay, so we need a better way to act and lead confidently in ambiguity.

The power of light actions

At Collective, we support leaders in honing their ability to lead through uncertainty with creativity, curiosity, and confidence. The unlock? Identifying the right Light Actions to get moving without resistance.

For instance, a major consumer app design team came to us wanting to rethink how they were approaching AI. What they’d done so far felt heavy: team members had to commit significant time, and they weren’t able to do it all alongside their day jobs. Plus, there was resistance to the idea of using AI tools. So we reframed from tool integration to AI curiosity. And that yielded a switch from a big commitment to a light ask: an invitation to a month of AI inspiration.

On a bigger scale, a major brand wanted to move from print to digital by empowering their team to be owners. To make that light, we invited a select set of teams within the organization to light action leadership sessions, where we covered experimentation, gathering inspiration, and more. These weekly sessions were complemented with permission to run small experiments evolving the brand (think Google's 20% projects), as long as they were structured, intentional, and required minimal outlay.

This went over the course of several months, and as a result, not only did new product ideas come out of this, but employees began acting like owners.

How about your organization?

Consider an uncertain space you and your team are trying to navigate. How has it been going? What's been going well and not?

If it hasn't progressed as you'd liked it to, what's slowing it down?

Why movement stalls in uncertainty

If you’re seeing ambiguity and uncertainty stall or slow down movment, it’s likely due to one of the “toos”:

  • It’s too big. (Teams launch pilots instead of experiments. Pilots are about doing; experiments are about learning.)

  • It’s too important. (We load uncertainty with so much meaning it feels scary or high-stakes, so we don’t start.)

  • It’s too time-consuming. (When actions drag on, momentum dies.)

Instead, light actions should feel quick, easy, even fun.
Because that’s the easiest way to gather meaningful momentum.

Want momentum in ambiguity?

We offer support for leaders, teams, and organizations in finding the right Light Actions to move them forward, and building and exercising Light Action muscles.

The results:

  • Confident movement in uncertainty

  • Stronger muscles for creativity, curiosity, and confidence in uncertainty

  • An ownership mindset
